RESUMEN

Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the agreement of visual acuity (VA) obtained with the sweep visual evoked potential (sVEP) method with the VA obtained with the Snellen chart. The secondary objective was to examine the effect of age and gender on agreement. Materials and Methods: Best corrected VAs of subjects were recorded with the Snellen chart, and sVEP testing was performed according to the recommendations of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV). Snellen VAs and sVEP measurements were analyzed using logMAR conversion for statistical analysis. Agreement was evaluated with Bland-Altman analysis. Results: The study included 49 subjects with a mean age of 53.5±17.3 years (range: 19-75 years) and mean Snellen VA of 0.31±0.32 logMAR (range: 1.3-0.0 logMAR). In the Bland-Altman analysis, the mean differences between the VA and sVEP measurements (VA-sVEP) were significantly different and outside the limits of agreement (p=0.035). A significant proportional bias (p=0.0007) was found in the regression analysis performed between VA-sVEP and the mean VA. According to the Bland-Altman analysis of sex subgroups, there was a significant difference between VA and sVEP measurements in female subjects (p=0.006). The difference between VA and sVEP measurement increased significantly with older age (R2: 0.306, p<0.001, ß: 0.05 [0.03, 0.08]). Conclusion: In conclusion, sVEP measurements and VAs did not show statistical agreement. Cranial anatomy and endocrine differences of the subjects may affect their sVEP measurements. The difference between the methods varies according to VA level. Directly using sVEP results instead of VA would not be appropriate.

RESUMEN

Diagnosis of infection-causing microorganisms with sensitive, rapid, selective and economical diagnostic tests is critical to start the right treatment. With these tests, the spread of infections can be prevented. In addition to that, the detection of antimicrobial resistance also makes a significant contribution to public health. In recent years, different types of diagnostic tests have been developed as alternatives to traditional diagnostic tests used in clinics. In particular, colorimetric tests, which minimize the need for an instrument, have advantages owing to their cost effectiveness, rapid response and naked-eye detection and practical use. In this review, we especially focused on pH indicators and nanomaterial-based colorimetric tests in detection of infection-causing microorganisms and antimicrobial resistance.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether meibomian glands and ocular surface parameters are affected by repeated topical povidone-iodine and antibiotic applications in patients with repeated intravitreal injections. METHODS: Forty-five patients with at least three previous intravitreal injections and 28 healthy controls were included in the study. In the injection group, 21 patients had age-related macular degeneration and 24 patients had diabetic macular edema. For each participant, infrared meibography for the upper and lower eyelids and noninvasive tear break-up time calculation were performed with a corneal topographer. Fluorescein tear break-up time and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) scores were also obtained. Noninvasive tear break-up time, fluorescein tear break-up time, and OSDI scores were recorded for each participant and compared between the injection and control groups. These parameters were also compared as a subgroup analysis between patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME). RESULTS: Upper lid meibomian gland loss, lower lid meibomian gland loss ratios, and OSDI scores were significantly higher in the intravitreal injection group compared with the control group (P=0.004, P<0.001, P<0.001, respectively). Fluorescein tear break-up time and noninvasive tear break-up time were significantly lower in the intravitreal injection group compared with the control group (P<0.001, P<0.001). There was no significant difference between the AMD and DME groups for these parameters. CONCLUSION: This study showed for the first time that meibomian gland losses were significantly increased by repeated povidone-iodine and antibiotic applications in patients with repeated intravitreal injections. Ocular surface parameters were altered with higher ocular surface symptoms in those patients.

RESUMEN

Desmoid tumor is a benign tumor which originates from musculoaponeurotic system, can reach greater sizes with local invasion among facial plans, and cause severe deformities, morbidity and even mortality by compression of adjacent structures. These tumors are rarely seen in the head and neck region. The treatment of advanced desmoid tumors of head and neck region is surgery and radiotherapy. In this paper, we present -to the best of our knowledge- the greatest desmoid tumor case of the head and neck region in the literature.

RESUMEN

Tufted angiomas may occur in the head and neck region, but the external auditory canal is a previously undefined localization. There are only 19 cases of hemangiomas reported in this unique localization. However, this case is the first capillary hemangioma of the tufted variant being reported with a recurrence after 7 years after surgical excision in a 47-year-old male patient.
